Life After School…
February 6, 2008 shannon16
I’m sure that we’re all feeling it…that burn, or anxiousness to begin taking our career path on the day that we graduate. I know that if it were up to my parents, I would have an office and a 9-5 job the day after I throw up my graduation cap.
However, I do not feel like this is my destiny. I need a breather. I need a break. Although my bank account is probably going to hate me for it, I want to invest in traveling in the months following graduation.
I know that many people may think that this is a crazy decision and that I am wasting precious career building time, but I disagree. I feel that traveling for a few months will re-charge my battery (which is LOW at this point). Allow me to see this large world that I have only studied in the past 18 years that I have been enrolled in numerous institutions. Finally, it will allow me to fully focus on my career when I am READY to settle into that phase of my life.
For the first time in a long time I look forward to the next few month of my life. I don’t have a set plan or a schedule to guide me. Instead, I am entering an unknown realm that begins the day after I throw up my graduation cap, which is a feeling that I haven’t felt in a long time.

I don’t think your crazy. I think thats a great idea. Travel now before you are tied down with a career or a family.
If I dont get accepted to school next year I’m going to work for a few months (because I need money) and then travel before looking for a career.
Keep us updated on your possible travel destinations!

I definitely agree. My parents would love for me to get a great job after graduation, but they also know that that’s not what I want. When I am done school, finally after 18 years, I want to relax. Travel is the best thing that I can think of. Some people think that it’s just an escape from the real world that we eventually have to get into, but I think it’s the total opposite. Traveling opens your mind and gives you experiences that you would never have if I were to stay at home and work my 9-5 job. I’m not saying that people who go straight into the work force will be doomed for failure, but for me, I’m just not ready to settle down yet. I want to experience things on my own and develop myself as an individual before I get a career, married or kids.

I think you’re doing the right thing. Go for it. Life is too short.

I totally agree with you about the need to travel after school. I think that you can learn a lot about yourself from taking in new and different experiences, maybe even more than you would from sitting in a classroom or in an office. You can always make it up to your bank account later.

Nice Shannon. I would love to bail on most of my responsibilities for a few months after graduation but we’ll see how that turns out.

I travelled last year after graduation and it was the best way to finish up school. It was so nice to explore a new place and put your brain on pause for a minute. I only wish I had the money to do it again this year. Where do you plan on going?

If there’s anything we learned from the speeches a couple of weeks ago, it is that we should all travel! That’s something I haven’t had the opportunity to do much of in the past few years. And it’s never too late to do anything that you want to! Everyone makes decisions that are right for them…I say if you’re heart is into, go travel before you start your PR career!
